Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)
Definition
A Required Minimum Distribution is a mandatory annual withdrawal from a Traditional IRA starting at age 73. The IRS calculates the amount based on your account balance and a life expectancy factor from IRS tables. Roth IRAs do not require RMDs during the owner's lifetime. For Gold IRAs, meeting your RMD may require selling some metal to generate enough cash, since you cannot distribute fractional coins or bars.
Why It Matters for Gold IRA Investors
RMDs affect the long-term viability of holding physical metals in a retirement account. If gold prices are low when your RMD comes due, you may have to sell at an unfavorable time. Planning for RMDs is part of evaluating whether a Gold IRA fits your retirement timeline.
